Our Commitment to LGBTQ+ Inclusion
The Chicago Smelts is an LGBTQ+ inclusive Masters swim team where swimmers of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions are welcomed, celebrated, and protected. Since our founding in 1988, we have coupled advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community with an emphasis on personal growth, swimming excellence, and community. That ethos remains central to who we are today.
We know that prospective and current members sometimes have questions about gender identity, gender expression, competition eligibility, and facility use. The information below is intended to be transparent, affirming, and supportive.
We affirm that:
Transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming swimmers are full and valued members of our team.
Members may present themselves, dress, and express their gender in ways that feel authentic to them.
Harassment or discrimination based on gender identity or gender expression is not tolerated.
If you ever have concerns about safety, inclusion, or respect at practice or events, we encourage you to contact a member of the Board. Your wellbeing matters.
Bathrooms and Locker Rooms
The Chicago Smelts practice at Chicago Park District facilities, which have a gender-inclusive bathroom and locker room policy. This policy allows individuals to use restrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identity.
The Park Districtβs Gender Diversity Policy is designed to:
Create an inclusive park environment for patrons and staff
Support transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people
Foster a sense of belonging and safety in all Park District programs and facilities
We are proud to partner with the Chicago Park District and fully support these inclusive policies.
Support for Individual Swimmers
Policies can be confusing and stressful, especially when they affect personal identity and safety. Any swimmer with questions or concerns about how USMSβs Interim Eligibility Policy may apply to them is encouraged to reach out.
You may contact Member Representative representative@chicagosmelts.org or any member of the Board info@chicagosmelts.org . We will work with you one-on-one to determine the best course of action to support both your participation in competition and your wellbeing.
